This is my song of triumph over alcohol. My anthem. The writing of the song spanned my entire fight with alcoholism. Not that the song is so intricate or complex that it took a long period to write, but rather one of those songs that a few lines were jotted down and forgotten about until a later date.
The first lines of the song were written in my early 20's inspired by a segment on a news journal about drug addiction. Little did I know that I was about to start my own journey into addiction, except with alcohol instead of drugs. The chorus and music was written during one of my periods of sobriety. By my late 20's I had the song finished (minus the solo which was written recently). A friend had suggested that I wait to record the song until I could honestly say I was "free" of alcohol. I agreed, though I didn't think it would take another 20 years for that to be true.
The song is written sounding like a break up song, and if I didn't explain it further, that would be the perception. I was once asked why I didn't put some lines in the song that would make the meaning more obvious, to which my reply is that alcoholism/drug addiction is a love affair. The most one sided, selfish, possessive relationship anyone could ever have, but a love affair none the less. Those who have been through the struggle will understand the association, those who haven't can still relate to the relationship aspect.
I hope to give those who are still struggling inspiration to keep fighting. As of this writing I am 7 years sober. If I can do it, so can you. Never give up the fight. We are in this together.
This song is dedicated to the 15 people that I have known personally who has lost the battle. You are gone but not forgotten.
